Smart Light Pole Low-Carbon Renovation Case: Urban Smart Infrastructure Upgrade in Oslo

Oslo, the capital of Norway, ranks among the world’s top cities for low-carbon environmental protection and smart urban construction. Committed to reducing urban carbon emissions and optimizing public infrastructure layout, the city has gradually phased out outdated, single-function municipal facilities. Traditional urban street facilities feature independent lighting lamps, separate monitoring devices and fixed publicity boards, resulting in repeated construction, high operating energy consumption and inconvenient unified management. To further improve urban refined governance and build a zero-carbon smart city, Oslo’s municipal authority carried out a batch upgrading of urban terminal equipment, adopting smart light pole as the core integrated hardware for urban street transformation.

This renovation project covers Oslo’s urban trunk roads, lakeside scenic avenues, community supporting roads and urban cultural parks. These areas undertake daily resident travel, urban landscape display, cultural tourism reception and public safety management. Before the renovation, scattered municipal facilities occupied public space, and fixed publicity carriers could not synchronize real-time traffic changes, cultural activity arrangements and environmental reminder information. In addition, traditional street lamps operated at fixed power all night, causing unnecessary energy waste, which was inconsistent with Oslo’s urban green development positioning. To solve these pain points, the government installed a large number of intelligent smart light poles to realize integrated municipal management.

In view of Oslo’s temperate oceanic climate with long winters, low temperatures, frequent snowfall and strong ultraviolet rays in summer, the customized smart city light pole adopts high-standard cold-resistant, waterproof and dust-proof industrial design. The integrated equipment integrates intelligent dimming lighting, outdoor display terminal, real-time environmental monitoring and safety early warning modules, replacing multiple sets of independent traditional facilities. The equipment maintains stable operation in snowy, rainy and low-temperature environments, with strong outdoor weather resistance and long service life.

Supported by cloud intelligent management platform, the smart light pole realizes remote unified control and flexible content release. It can dynamically display urban low-carbon advocacy, cultural exhibition information, traffic safety tips and real-time weather early warnings, while appropriately releasing local brand promotion and public welfare activity content to enrich urban outdoor public communication channels. The built-in sensing module automatically collects urban air quality, noise and microclimate data, providing reliable data support for urban ecological environment supervision.

After half a year of formal operation, the project has achieved remarkable green and intelligent benefits. The integrated layout of intelligent smart light poles standardizes urban street facilities and optimizes the overall urban landscape. Intelligent induction lighting greatly reduces urban power consumption and carbon emissions, effectively helping the city complete low-carbon assessment targets. Real-time information release and intelligent safety monitoring significantly improve urban public service efficiency and residents’ travel experience. This case proves that smart city light pole is an ideal intelligent terminal for Northern European cities to realize energy conservation, emission reduction and smart municipal upgrading.
